About
Aroma Duo is a cello–piano duo reimagining chamber music for the contemporary stage. Formed by two artists with distinguished international performing careers, the duo is recognized for innovative programming that features their own arrangements of works not originally written for cello and piano. By reframing familiar masterpieces, Aroma Duo uncovers surprising musical connections and shapes each performance as a cohesive, engaging narrative for their audiences.
In Concerts
Classical music can feel distant, even to audiences eager to connect. Aroma Duo closes that gap by transforming the concert space into something alive, immediate, and deeply human. Their performances offer more than an introduction to each piece; they extend an invitation to a shared experience, turning listening from a passive act into an engaged journey. Each performance is cohesive, engaging, and resonant, leaving audiences with a deeper connection to the music—and to one another.
Biography
Founded in 2019 by pianist Tianhong Yang and cellist Johnny Mok, Aroma Duo was formed at the intersection of distinct cultural and musical perspectives shaped by their education and professional experiences across Asia, Europe, and the United States.
Aroma Duo is recognized for innovative programming that includes their own arrangements of works not originally written for cello and piano, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations. Their repertoire actively champions modern and contemporary voices, particularly composers from Asia and the Middle East, reflecting a broader vision of classical music shaped by diverse cultural heritage rather than a single tradition.
In 2023, Aroma Duo marked a major milestone with their Carnegie Hall debut during a New England spring tour, followed by an Asia summer tour with performances in Nanjing and Macao. That same year, they appeared in Macao Alternative Music Festival and Istanbul Chamber Music Festival, including educational masterclass events connected to the festival. During the 2024–2025 season, the duo toured and performed in Thailand and Hong Kong, continuing to expand their presence across new communities and concert spaces internationally.
